The First and Only FDA-approved Permanent Filler for Wrinkles

Artefill® – THE FIRST TO LAST™Permanently smooth out your wrinkles and folds with Artefill, the first and only FDA-approved cosmetic filler which lasts 5 years or longer!* Results are immediate and only 1-2 treatments are usually required. Because of her vast experience with cosmetic injectables, Dr. Klein has the honor of being selected to be one of the first physicians in the world to be both an Artefill Trainer and Advisor.

Artefill contains tiny PMMA (poly-methyl-methacrylate) microspheres in a purified bovine collagen gel with an anesthetic for comfort during injection. The collagen acts as a carrier for the PMMA and dissolves over several months, leaving the microspheres in your skin. These microspheres provide the permanent support your skin needs for enduring wrinkle correction. PMMA is one of the most widely used synthetic implant materials in medicine.

While Juvederm and Restylane are still the fillers of choice for lips and fine lines and Radiesse is often the best choice for sculpting and plumping cheeks, Artefill is the treatment of choice for smile lines (the lines between the nose and corners of the mouth) when permanent correction is desired. Artefill can also be used to plump up marionette lines (the lines and depressions below the mouth), fill in scars and smooth out depressions and crooked contours on noses (the "LunchTime Nose Job"). Artefill is also often used in combination with Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Botox and laser rejuvenation treatments, such as Fraxel, IPL, GentleYag and V-Beam for comprehensive, no downtime rejuvenation.

Treatments typically last 10-20 minutes and are usually painless. Depending on the areas treated, more than one syringe may be needed to create the best look possible. Enhancements are recommended 1-3 months after your treatment to "fine-tune" your results.

Preparation for your Artefill treatment:

  • You must be skin tested 4 weeks or longer before your treatment to screen for allergy to bovine collagen.
  • We recommend waiting at least 6-9 months after you have had a temporary filler placed in the same area.
  • ****Make sure you wash your face thoroughly before your treatment, including removing lipstick and face creams.****
  • To reduce discomfort we will use a cold spray to numb your skin at the time of treatment.
  • To reduce the risk of bruising, we recommend you avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), vitamin E and similar medications for 1-2 weeks before your treatment. We recommend you take Arnica Montana, a natural oral medication (a high-potency version of this is available in our office) the day of your treatment and continue for several days after your treatment. This medication helps reduce bruising and swelling.

What to expect after your treatment: After injection, some common, temporary, injection-related reactions might occur: tenderness, redness, itching, bruising, bumps, pain or swelling. If any of these occur, they typically resolve within a few days. We recommend planning your treatments at least one week before any special events. Some minor swelling can sometimes persist up to several weeks after your treatment. This type of swelling only enhances your results by filling in the wrinkles a little more than the product does. When the swelling completely disappears you may think the product is going away but it is only the swelling that has disappeared. If you preferred how you looked with a little swelling, we can add more filler at a subsequent appointment.

Rare potential side effects of all dermal fillers may be lumps, abscesses and granulomas, which are usually treatable.

Aftercare: We advise you not to squeeze, massage or sleep directly on the areas for 24 hours, as this may subtly change the shape of the filler. Exaggerated facial expression during the first 24 hours may also displace the gel, so avoid prolonged laughing and playing musical instruments with your mouth. Applying cold packs for 10-15 minutes every 30-60 minutes until bedtime on the 1st day and taking Arnica Montana for 1-2 days helps reduce swelling and bruising.

*Studies indicate Artefill lasts at least 5 years and is probably permanent. If you do not desire a permanent implant, Juvederm, Radiesse or Restylane may be preferable. If you have never used a cosmetic filler, we recommend trying one of these temporary fillers first before having a permanent filler. Artefill is not recommended for certain people. Prices subject to change without notice.
