Why a Chemical Peel Is More Than ‘Skin-Deep’

Facial resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels are excellent ways to refresh your skin’s appearance. We often recommend peels as part of an overall skin care regimen at our Orange County clinic for patients with conditions as diverse as fine wrinkling, brown spots, and uneven pigmentation.

Benefits of Facial Resurfacing

There’s even new evidence that resurfacing treatments, including photo rejuvenation and chemical peels, may have benefits that are more than skin-deep. A recent study publicized by the Skin Cancer Foundation showed that laser and chemical resurfacing treatments may help prevent the formation of pre-cancerous lesions known as actinic keratoses. Up to 10% of these lesions develop into squamous cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.

Chemical peels and laser resurfacing treatments are often used to treat actinic keratosis lesions, but the new research conducted by the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Medical Center found that these treatments may even prevent them. Fraxel® Dual Laser Peels are also FDA-cleared to treat actinic keratosis.

Chemical Peels

Although the link is still being studied, as a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in diagnosing and treating skin cancer, I’m well aware of both the cosmetic and medical benefits of chemical peels.

I’m fortunate to have a team of skilled and experienced estheticians performing chemical peels under my direction at Euro Day Spa. A great way to learn more about chemical peels is by coming to our “Peel Party” on May 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. We’ll be offering SkinMedica’s® medical-grade skin peels, including the Illuminize peel, which requires no downtime, and the Vitalize peel, which creates more dramatic, lasting results.
